tips to improve your home network security
**Change the default password.Even though most internet providers have a random password on the bottom of their provided router the best security is to change it to a more complex password at least 10 characters with upper and lower case along with a number and special character.**Change the default name of the provided router. Most published SSID or name of your router is not randomized at all and typically publishes the brand of router or provider name. Best practice is to change it to something random. Do not include any private information like your last name or street address. This applies for your Guest network as well.**Do not publish the SSID.If at all capable disabled the “publish SSID” feature on your router. Sometimes this cannot be done due to issues with connected devices but if you cannot at least follow tip two.**Enable Wi-Fi encryption.Opt for the highest encryption available on your router WPA2/3 is usually the highest available on all modern day routers.**Enable your Guest network for your guest. If you have large gatherings or family over give them your Guest network name and password. When they leave best practice is to change your Guest network password. This is also a good idea for your “at home” work using your company provided system as this keeps them from snooping on your primary network.
- **Use a physical connection for financial business.
- Even though your network is has the capability of Wi-Fi best practice is to plug in when doing any sensitive work on your home computer.
- **Remote Access on your router.
- Best practice is to turn off remote access on your router unless you need it or presently using it. 99% of the basic users do not need this function.
- **Routers Logs.
- Check your routers logs from time to time maybe at least once a week for suspicious activity. Also check the number of connected devices and verify they are what you allow. You should be able to “kickoff” any unwanted systems on your network. If you are not sure what is connected you can disconnect it and always reconnect and then make a note of that device name and MAC address.
- **MAC filtering
- Once you have established what MAC address is associated with your devices setup MAC filtering and only allow those MAC address on your network.
- **Limit IP Addresses
- Once you figure out how many devices you have then only allow your DHCP router scope to hand out those number of addresses.
